In Pakistani homes the dining table is busy: family meals, homework, guests and the occasional big dawat. A table that is too large blocks the room; one that is too small leaves people eating on the sofa. The good news is that dining room sizing follows a few simple rules.

Rules of thumb

  • Allow about 24 inches of table width per person.
  • Leave 36 inches between the table edge and the wall so chairs can slide out (30 inches minimum).
  • Standard table height is 29–30 inches.
  • Round tables fit square rooms; rectangles fit long rooms.

Standard dining table sizes

Seats Rectangular Round Minimum room
4 36″ × 48″ 36–44″ diameter 9 × 10 ft
6 36–40″ × 60–72″ 48–54″ diameter 10 × 12 ft
8 40–42″ × 84–96″ 60–72″ diameter 12 × 14 ft

To find the room size you need, add 6 feet (36 inches on each side) to the table’s length and width. A 6-seater table of 3 × 6 ft therefore needs about a 9 × 12 ft space.

Round, square or rectangular?

  • Round: everyone can see each other and there are no corners — great for small, square rooms and families with young kids.
  • Rectangular: the most common choice; fits long dining areas and extends easily for guests.
  • Square: neat for four people in compact apartments.

Planning for dawats

If you host large gatherings a few times a year, do not buy a table for the biggest party — buy for daily use and plan extra seating. A 6-seater with two extra chairs, a sideboard for serving dishes and a buffet setup on the side works better than an oversized 10-seater that crowds the room every day.

Dining sets, chairs and sideboards

Choosing chairs

Dining chairs have a seat height of around 18 inches, leaving 10–12 inches of leg room under the table. Upholstered chairs are more comfortable for long meals; solid wood chairs are easier to clean. Chairs with arms need about 26 inches of width each, so check they fit under the table.

Add a sideboard

A sideboard or dining cabinet keeps crockery, table linen and serving dishes close at hand and doubles as a serving counter during dawats. Leave at least 36 inches between the sideboard and the back of the chairs.

Table materials

Solid wood tables last for decades and can be re-polished. Glass and stone tops look modern but need careful handling. Whatever you choose, use placemats and coasters, and wipe spills quickly. See the furniture care guide for daily care, or browse all dining furniture.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard size of a 6-seater dining table?

A rectangular 6-seater is usually 36–40 inches wide and 60–72 inches long. A round 6-seater is about 48–54 inches in diameter.

How much space do I need around a dining table?

Ideally 36 inches between the table and the wall or other furniture, so chairs slide out and people can walk behind them. 30 inches is the minimum.

Is a round or rectangular table better for a small room?

A round table usually works better in small or square rooms, because it has no corners and needs less clearance.
