In this guide
Whether you work from home full time, run a business from a spare room or study late into the night, the right setup protects your back, eyes and focus. You do not need a large room — you need the right measurements. This guide shows you how to set up a home office that you can work in comfortably for eight hours.
- Desk height around 29–30 inches for most adults.
- Feet flat on the floor, knees at about 90°.
- Top of the screen at or slightly below eye level, an arm’s length away.
- Elbows relaxed at desk height, wrists straight.
Choosing the right desk
Size
A desk at least 48 inches wide and 24 inches deep fits a laptop, a monitor and notebooks. If you use two monitors or spread out paperwork, go for 60 inches or more. Executive desks with drawers and a return work well if clients visit your office.
Material
Solid wood and good veneered desks stay stable and do not wobble when you type. Avoid thin board desks for full-time work — they flex and loosen over time.

The chair matters more than the desk
You will sit in your chair for thousands of hours a year. Look for:
- Adjustable seat height so your feet rest flat.
- Lumbar support that fits the curve of your lower back.
- Armrests at desk height so your shoulders stay relaxed.
- Breathable upholstery — mesh or fabric is cooler than leatherite in summer.
- A stable five-star base with smooth castors.
Desks, chairs and office storage
Layout for small rooms
- Face a wall, not a window: sit with the window to your side to avoid screen glare.
- Use vertical storage: a tall bookcase or file cabinet saves floor space.
- Keep 36 inches behind the chair so you can push back comfortably.
- Corner desks make use of awkward corners in bedrooms or lounges.

Light, power and comfort
Use daylight where possible and add a desk lamp for evening work. Plan your power: place the UPS and router close to the desk, use a cable tray under the desktop, and keep extension boards off the floor. A small side table or credenza keeps the printer and tea within reach without cluttering your work surface.
The 20-20-20 rule
Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Stand and stretch every hour. A comfortable chair helps, but movement matters most.
