Setting up a new bedroom — after a move, for a wedding, or for a child growing up — is easier with a checklist. This guide lists every piece a complete bedroom needs, the sizes that fit and the order to buy them in so your budget goes where it matters most.

The essentials

  • Bed and a good mattress
  • Two side tables
  • Wardrobe
  • Dresser or dressing table
  • A chair or bench

1. The bed

Start here — the bed decides the size of everything else. Choose king (72 × 78″) for most master bedrooms or queen (60 × 78″) for smaller rooms. Leave 24–30 inches around three sides. Full details are in our bed sizes guide.

2. Side tables

Side tables should be roughly level with the top of your mattress (usually 22–28 inches high) so you can reach your phone and water at night. Drawers keep the surface tidy.

3. Wardrobe

Pick the widest wardrobe your wall allows — storage always fills up. Hinged doors need 2 feet of clear space; sliding doors need none. Read the wardrobe buying guide for sizes and inside layouts.

4. Dresser or dressing table

A dressing table with a mirror is a must in many Pakistani bedrooms. Place it near natural light, and leave about 36 inches in front for the stool.

5. A chair or bench

A small armchair by the window becomes a reading corner; a bench at the foot of the bed is handy for getting dressed. Both need very little space.

How much space does it all need?

Room size What fits comfortably
11 × 12 ft Queen bed, two side tables, 2–3 door wardrobe
12 × 14 ft King bed, two side tables, 3-door wardrobe, small dresser
14 × 16 ft+ King bed, full bedroom set, 4-door wardrobe, chair or bench

The order to buy in

  1. Bed and mattress — your sleep comes first.
  2. Wardrobe — so clothes have a home.
  3. Side tables — small but used every day.
  4. Dresser and chair — add these as the budget allows.

Buying a matching bedroom set often costs less than buying each piece separately and guarantees the colours match.

Finishing touches

  • Use the same wood tone for the bed, side tables and wardrobe for a calm look.
  • Choose blackout curtains for summer afternoons.
  • Keep the walkway to the bathroom and door completely clear.

Frequently asked questions

What furniture does a bedroom need?

A bed and mattress, two side tables and a wardrobe are the essentials. A dresser and a chair or bench complete the room.

Is a bedroom set better than buying pieces separately?

A matching set usually costs less overall and guarantees the wood and colours match, but separate pieces let you mix styles and spread the cost.

What height should side tables be?

Roughly level with the top of your mattress — usually 22–28 inches — so items are easy to reach from bed.
