A good bed is the one piece of furniture you use every single day. A well-made solid wood bed can last 20 years or more; a poorly made one starts creaking within months. The difference is rarely visible in photos — it is in the wood, the seasoning and the joints. Here is what to check before you buy.
- Seasoned (kiln-dried) solid wood frame — not just a wood veneer.
- Strong joints: mortise-and-tenon or metal bed bolts, not only screws.
- Central support rail with legs for king and queen beds.
- Slats or a solid base that matches your mattress.
- A smooth, sealed finish that resists humidity and termites.
Which wood is best for a bed in Pakistan?
| Wood | Strength | Look | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sheesham (Indian rosewood) | Very high | Rich brown grain | Dense, naturally durable, the classic Pakistani choice |
| Oak / Ash | High | Light, open grain | Popular for modern Scandinavian-style beds |
| Kikar (Acacia) | High | Mixed tones | Strong and affordable when well seasoned |
| MDF / particle board | Low–medium | Painted or laminated | Cheaper, but weak against moisture and repeated assembly |
For a long-term bed, choose a solid wood frame. Engineered boards are fine for headboard panels or drawer bottoms, but the legs, rails and support beams should be solid timber. Read our Sheesham vs MDF guide for the full comparison.

Why seasoning matters
Freshly cut wood is full of moisture. If it is made into furniture before it dries, it shrinks, cracks and loosens its own joints — usually in the first winter. Good makers kiln-dry or air-season the timber first, then treat it against termites. Ask the seller directly: “Is the wood seasoned and treated?” A confident yes is a good sign.
Check the joints and support
Joints
The corners where rails meet the headboard and footboard carry the most load. Look for mortise-and-tenon joints or heavy metal bed bolts. Beds held together only by small wood screws loosen quickly as the wood moves with the seasons.
Centre support
Every queen and king bed needs a centre rail running from head to foot, with at least one or two legs touching the floor. Without it, the slats bend and the mattress sags in the middle.
Slats or solid base
Foam mattresses work well on a solid board or slats spaced no more than 3 inches apart. Spring mattresses can sit on slightly wider slats. A solid base also stops the mattress from slipping.
Solid wood bedroom sets
Choose the right style for your room
- Platform beds: low and minimal — great for modern apartments and small rooms.
- Upholstered and wingback beds: soft, cushioned headboards that feel luxurious; choose a performance fabric that is easy to clean.
- Fluted and panel beds: carved or ribbed wood headboards that suit both classic and modern homes.
- Storage beds: drawers or a lift-up base for quilts and seasonal clothes — very useful in smaller homes.

Finish and care
A good finish seals the wood against humidity, which is important during the monsoon. Matte lacquer and PU finishes are easy to wipe clean. Dust with a soft dry cloth, keep the bed away from direct sunlight and radiators, and polish once or twice a year. Our furniture care guide covers this step by step.

Frequently asked questions
Is Sheesham wood good for beds?
Yes. Sheesham is dense, strong and naturally durable, which makes it one of the best woods for beds in Pakistan — as long as it is properly seasoned and treated.
Why does my wooden bed creak?
Creaking usually means loose joints or slats rubbing together. Tighten the bed bolts, check the centre support legs touch the floor, and add felt pads between slats and rails.
How long does a solid wood bed last?
A well-made, seasoned solid wood bed can last 20 years or more. COZY.PK solid wood frames come with a 10-year structural warranty.
