In this guide
L-shaped sofas have become the most popular choice for TV lounges in Pakistani homes — they seat the whole family, make use of corners and feel relaxed and modern. But they also bring a new question that confuses many buyers: left or right? This guide answers it, along with sizes and layout tips.
- “Left” or “right” is decided while facing the sofa.
- Measure both walls from the corner, not just one.
- Leave at least 30 inches between the chaise end and any door or walkway.
- Modular sectionals can switch sides later.
Left-hand vs right-hand: how to choose
Stand in front of where the sofa will go, facing the wall. If the longer, extended part (the chaise or return) needs to be on your left, you need a left-facing L-shape. If it is on your right, choose right-facing. Most sellers use this “facing the sofa” rule, but always confirm with a quick sketch or photo before ordering.
Not sure? Choose a modular sectional — the corner and chaise pieces can be swapped to either side.

Standard L-shaped sofa sizes
| Size | Long side | Short side | Seats | Room size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact | 80–90″ | 60–65″ | 4 | 10 × 12 ft |
| Standard | 95–110″ | 65–80″ | 5–6 | 12 × 14 ft |
| Large / U-shape | 115″+ | 80″+ | 7+ | 14 × 16 ft and up |
Seat depth on L-shapes is usually 34–40 inches, a little deeper than a normal sofa, because people tend to lounge on them.
How to measure your corner
- Measure wall A from the corner to the point where the sofa must stop (a door, window or switchboard).
- Measure wall B the same way.
- Check windows: a sofa back is usually 30–36 inches high — make sure it does not block a low window.
- Mark the shape on the floor with tape and leave 30 inches of walkway at the open end.

Layout ideas
TV lounge
Place the long side facing the TV and the short side along the side wall. Keep the screen about 1.5–2.5 times its diagonal size away from the seats (for a 55-inch TV, roughly 7–11 feet).
Open-plan apartment
Float the L-shape in the room with its back to the dining area. It creates a “living zone” without building a wall. Put a slim console table behind it for lamps and keys.
Drawing room
Pair an L-shape with one or two accent chairs opposite to keep conversation easy. See our accent chair guide for ideas.

What to check before you buy
- A solid wood frame and firm joints at the corner piece — that is where most stress goes.
- High-density seat foam so the corner seat does not sink.
- Removable or easy-clean covers for family use.
- Whether it arrives in sections that fit through your doors.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I need a left or right L-shaped sofa?
Stand facing where the sofa will go. If the long extended part should be on your left, choose left-facing; if on your right, choose right-facing. A modular sectional can switch sides.
Will an L-shaped sofa fit a small room?
Yes — compact L-shapes around 80–90 inches on the long side fit rooms of about 10 × 12 ft and often seat more people than a separate sofa set.
Can I get an L-shaped sofa made to my size?
Yes. COZY.PK makes custom sofas to your measurements — send your corner measurements on WhatsApp for a quote.
