In this guide
The Chesterfield is one of the most recognisable sofas in the world — deep buttons, rolled arms and a back the same height as the arms. It looks right in a formal drawing room, a study or an office. Before you buy one, it helps to understand the difference between genuine leather and leatherite, and how each lives in Pakistani weather.
- Genuine leather: very long-lasting, ages beautifully, costs more, needs conditioning.
- Leatherite (PU): looks similar, easy to clean, lower price, can peel in heat and sun over time.
- Real Chesterfields have deep button tufting and rolled arms level with the back.
What makes a Chesterfield?
- Deep button tufting across the back and arms.
- Rolled, scrolled arms that sit at the same height as the back.
- Low, wide proportions on short turned or bun feet.
- Often nailhead trim along the arms.

Genuine leather vs leatherite
| Genuine leather | Leatherite (PU) | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Soft, warms to the body | Smooth, can feel sticky in heat |
| Lifespan | 15+ years with care | Around 3–7 years, depending on use and sun |
| Ageing | Develops a rich patina | Can crack or peel |
| Cleaning | Wipe; condition 1–2 × a year | Wipe only |
| Price | Higher | Lower |
How to tell them apart
Genuine leather has small natural marks and irregular pores, smells natural, and the back of the material looks suede-like. Leatherite has a uniform printed grain and a fabric backing. Ask the seller to state the material clearly.
Leather in Pakistani weather
Heat and direct sunlight are the biggest enemies of both leather and leatherite. Keep the sofa away from windows with strong afternoon sun and at least 3 feet from heaters in winter. In very hot rooms without air-conditioning, a fabric sofa may be more comfortable — compare options in our sofa fabrics guide.
Chesterfield and classic sofas
Choosing colour
- Saddle brown and tan: warm and classic; hides wear well.
- Black and charcoal: formal, great for offices.
- Oxblood, cherry red and jade green: bold statement pieces for drawing rooms.

Caring for a leather sofa
- Dust weekly with a soft dry cloth.
- Wipe spills straight away with a slightly damp cloth, then dry.
- Condition genuine leather once or twice a year.
- Avoid harsh cleaners, alcohol and baby wipes, which dry out the surface.

Frequently asked questions
Is leatherite the same as leather?
No. Leatherite is a PU-coated fabric made to look like leather. It is easier on the budget but usually does not last as long, especially in heat and sunlight.
Are leather sofas good in hot weather?
Genuine leather adapts to temperature better than leatherite, but both should be kept out of direct sun. In rooms without AC, breathable fabrics can be cooler.
What is a Chesterfield sofa?
A sofa with deep button tufting and rolled arms that sit level with the back, usually on short feet — a classic British design.
