A good wardrobe keeps your bedroom calm and your clothes organised for years. A poor one sags, sticks and runs out of space in the first season. Here is how to choose the right size, doors and inside layout — with Pakistani wardrobes in mind, from shalwar kameez and dupattas to winter quilts.

Quick guide

  • Depth: 22–24 inches for clothes on hangers.
  • Hinged doors need about 2 feet of free space to open.
  • Sliding doors suit small rooms and tight walkways.
  • Plan for long hanging space (about 60″) for kameez and dresses.

Standard wardrobe sizes

Type Width Height Good for
2-door 36–42″ 72–84″ One person, kids’ rooms
3-door 54–60″ 72–84″ Couples, guest rooms
4-door 72–84″ 78–90″ Master bedrooms

Measure your ceiling too: a wardrobe that reaches close to the ceiling gives top storage for suitcases and razai (quilts) and leaves no dusty gap on top.

Sliding or hinged doors?

Hinged doors

Open fully so you can see everything at once, and they are usually more affordable. They need about 2 feet of clear floor space in front — check the bed and side tables do not block them.

Sliding doors

Save space in small bedrooms and narrow passages, and look modern. You can only open half the wardrobe at a time, and the tracks need occasional cleaning to keep them smooth.

Plan the inside

  • Long hanging (55–60″): kameez, dresses, sherwanis and coats.
  • Short hanging (36–40″): shirts and trousers — two rails stacked double the space.
  • Shelves (12–14″ apart): folded clothes, shalwars and dupattas.
  • Drawers: socks, jewellery and accessories.
  • Locker: many Pakistani families like a lockable compartment for valuables.
  • Top lofts: quilts, suitcases and seasonal clothes.

Materials and finish

For the body and shelves, choose solid wood or good plywood so the shelves do not sag under folded clothes. MDF is fine for painted or fluted doors when properly sealed. Cane and rattan doors let air move through — useful in humid months to keep clothes fresh. Compare materials in our Sheesham vs MDF guide.

Placement tips

  • Leave a 2–3 inch gap from damp outer walls during the monsoon.
  • Keep the wardrobe out of direct sunlight to protect the finish.
  • Place it on the wall opposite or beside the bed — not where its doors hit the bed.
  • Fix tall wardrobes to the wall if you have small children.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard depth of a wardrobe?

About 22–24 inches, which lets clothes hang on hangers without touching the doors.

Are sliding wardrobes better for small rooms?

Yes. Sliding doors do not need space to swing open, so they work well in small bedrooms or where the bed is close to the wardrobe.

Can I order a wardrobe in a custom size?

Yes. COZY.PK builds custom wardrobes to fit your wall — send your measurements on WhatsApp for a quote.
